- Estimate water needs: dogs typically drink about 0.5–1 fl oz per lb per day. Multiply your dog's weight by 0.5–1 to see how much water they'll need daily and choose a bowl capacity that fits your refill schedule.
- If you feed measured meals: check your typical single-meal portion — the bowl should comfortably hold the portion plus any water you serve.
- To check elevated fit: measure from the floor to the dog's lower chest (where their front legs meet the chest). The top of the bowl should be around that level so the dog can eat with a natural neck posture. If unsure, choose by weight and capacity as above.
